Meeting July 22, 2014
Minutes
Present: Chairperson Barbara Swartz , Mary Ellen Halliwell, Marcia Lambert, Lisa Lyons, Judith Wolfe, Ellen Talkowsky Absent: Sam Fiori, Bev Moustakis, Sandra Power, Barbara Sirois, Visitors: City Councilor, William Legault, Marie Turley
Meeting was called to order at 7:10 P.M.
1. Approval of Minutes: The Meeting scheduled for May 27, 2914 was not held. The Minutes of the meeting held June 24, 2014 were adopted as written
2. Reminders and Announcements:
Re-appointment and applications:
Mayoral reappointments of four current Committee members were noted.
Membership application requirements were noted for the benefit of meeting visitors.
Interest in FB page/web page:
Involvement with social media was discussed. A Committee Face Book page was
considered. The management of the Lady of Salem Face Book page was reported.
3. Window Box and Traffic Island Competition
Judging will take place on July 26th and 27th.
An awards Ceremony & Reception, will be held Thursday, August 7th at 5:30 p.m. at the
Brookhouse. A Committee member was designated to represent the Committee at
the event.
To Do: A list of tasks related to the Competition was discussed, current progress noted
and assignments made.
4. Active Duty Service Island Update
The status of the Island plantings was reported. A maintenance calendar is to be created
by which members will be assigned the duty to check out the Committee island and
perform whatever cleanup activities are necessary.
5. Traffic Islands
It was gratefully reported that certain of the islands will be maintained by volunteers. The Northey Street Bed and Breakfast has expressed an interest in maintaining an Island near Bridge Street and will invite other Bridge Street neighbors to participate.
6. Lady of Salem
Plans for the display and picture taking opportunities with a “traveling” Lady of Salem figure at the Heritage Days Festival and Essex Street Fair were shared. Donations are accepted and the collection is given to the Sunday Kids organization. Additional sponsors are being sought.
7. New Business
A “keeping Salem clean” goal was considered. The recent Artist Row cleanup project
managed by our city Counselor William Legault was suggested to be a model for future ongoing volunteer sponsored cleanup projects. It was suggested that discussion on the Committee Face Book Page and the creation of stencils would be helpful. Committee participation on a TV program and in a Salem round table discussion are planned.
A Motion to adjourn was proposed and allowed. The meeting adjourned at 8:25 P.M.
